5. File Operations

If you want to start a file operation, like copy, move, delete etc., you first have to select which files should be affected. This is done either with the space key to select or unselect files or with the select (+ key) respectively unselect (- key) menu for selecting groups of files. If you, for instance, want to select all your backup files beginning with a tilde simply press the + key. In the appearing dialog type the following:

If you have not selected any file a file operation is done for the file on which the file cursor resides. After you have selected the files you can start the file operation.

Copying files

To copy files simply press F5. You copy all selected files in your active window to the directory of the other window by default. After you have pressed F5 a dialog pops up with the directory of the other window as default. You can change this directory if you like.

Simply press RETURN after you have entered the correct destination path. Now, the copy process is started and a dialog shows you the current status of the operation.

Moving files

This is similar to copying, except that you have to press F6 and that the file in the source directory is deleted if the operation succeeds.

Deleting files

When you press F8, a dialog warns you that you are going to delete all selected files in your active directory. You can now press ESC if you don't want it or RETURN to start deleting the files.

Change Attributes

To change the attributes of the selected files choose "Change Attributes" from the menu or press CTRL+A. A dialog pops up where you see all attributes and you can change them. If you choose a mark, the attribute will be set, if you use a blank field the attribute will be unset.

In the dialog above, all selected files have the "read user", "read group", "read other", and "write user" attribute set as well as the "write user" and "write group" attribute unset. The attributes "execute user", "execute group" and "execute other" are set simultanously set and unset. If you want, for example, set the "write group" attribute on all files, mark the check box and leave all other attributes untouched.
